Hagen Quartet

String Quartet
Management: Spain - Portugal
Artist

The unparalleled career of the Hagen Quartet, now spanning four decades, began in 1981. The early years were marked by competition successes and an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. The Hagen Quartet has been an honorary member of the Konzerthaus Wien since 2012, and received the Concertgebouw Amsterdam Prijs in 2019 for its longstanding artistic brilliance and contribution.

In the 2023/24 season, the ensemble will focus on music by Haydn, Bartok, Debussy, Ravel and Beethoven. But also string quintets by Mozart with Jörg Widmann and Schubert with Julia Hagen. The 2023/24 tours will take the Hagen Quartet to Japan, the USA, Italy and Spain. In addition to its cycle at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Hagen Quartet will play in Prague, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, Oslo and at the Schubertiade in Austria, among others.

Their repertoire consists of cleverly combined programmes spanning the entire history of the quartet. In addition, the Hagen Quartet performs premieres by composers of their generation. Collaborations with artists such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and György Kurtág have been and continue to be as important for the Hagen Quartet as joint performances with Maurizio Pollini, Mitsuko Uchida, Krystian Zimerman, Heinrich Schiff, Jörg Widmann, Kirill Gerstein, Sol Gabetta and Gautier Capucon.

For a large number of young string quartets, the Hagen Quartet is a role model in terms of sound quality, stylistic diversity, interaction and commitment to the works and composers of their genre. They are teachers and mentors at the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Hochschule Basel and also give masterclasses around the world.

The Hagen Quartet plays on old Italian master instruments.

Reviews
Bachtrack

“If not earlier then definitely now the Hagen Quartett managed to construct such an incredible space and the audience could fully indulge in the flow of the music.”

Rundschau-online.de

“(…) an incredibly blooming sound volume; the delicateness, the elegance and balance of the two violinists was delightful, especially in the Andante above the lightly placed Cello notes.”

Bachtrack

“The musicians are looking back on 36 years of mutual career. Not only the family bonds, but also the common years of musicianship have made them embody all questions of interpretation, intonation, tempi and coordination. Intensive eye contact at the performance is not necessary, especially the three siblings follow the sheet music, all devoted to the music – a sworn in community calmly trusting in eachother.”

Drehpunkt Kultur

“Music that sounds as if it came from another planet…”

Presse.com

“The pinnacle of musicality!”
